Attorney Susan LePeau DeCostanza (Susana)

usan has been practicing law in Chicago, Illinois, for more than 10 years and has spent most of her career working on probate cases involving guardianships for adults with disabilities and children. Before joining Ruben Garcia and Associates, Ltd., Susan was the Director of the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) for Adults program at Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation (CVLS), and in that capacity she trained and provided wide-ranging support for the many attorneys who volunteer in that program on a variety of legal issues. Susan has extensive experience acting as a GAL for children and coordinated GAL volunteers in Bridgeview guardianship cases. Before joining CVLS as a staff attorney in 2010, Susan was a CVLS law student intern. In addition, she volunteered at CVLS while working at Chicago-Kent College of Law as a public interest career counselor and DePaul as pro bono program coordinator.

Susan also has experience with civil rights litigation in both not-for-profit and law firm settings. Susan received the esteemed Kimball R. Anderson and Karen Gatsis Anderson Public Interest Law Fellowship in 2012 for her demonstrated commitment to public interest work, academic achievement and outstanding character and integrity. Susan also went on to win the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) Distinguished Intern Alumni Award in 2017.

Susan is professionally fluent in Spanish.

Susan earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Elementary Education at Boston College (2001) and her law degree at DePaul University College of Law (JD, 2008). Originally from Downers Grove, Illinois, Susan now lives in Chicago with her family. During her time off, Susan enjoys road trips with her family and reading.
